Most children at some point think about what they will be when they grow up. Will they be a teacher, an athlete, a writer, an actor, a policeman, a dancer, a fireman, a priest, etc.? This is an imaginary story about the daily lives of Leo and Lou, brother and sister field mice, and their family. In playing together Leo and Lou suggest occupations and professions they imagine for themselves: a nurse, a cowboy, a pilot, a ballerina, an author, etc. As mama and papa learn of their interests, the mama reminds them of the saying: “Be what you want to be.”

Leo & Lou: When We Grow Up, by S T Kimbrough Jr., with beautiful illustrations by award-winning illustrator, Mark S. Kimbrough, is a gem of a children’s book! It tells the story of a field-mouse family living under a wheat field, focusing on a brother and sister mouse, Leo and Lou, who imagine all the things they could be when they grow up.
This book validates a child’s sprawling imagination. Leo wants to be a “lone cow-poke,” while Lou explores a spectrum of possibilities—from a pilot, firefighter, and zookeeper to a dancer, painter, and a friendly priest! The text is written in melodic rhyme.
The core message of the book hits perfectly when Mama Mouse overhears their games and shares an empowering piece of advice: “Be what you want to be.” It’s a reminder to young readers that their desires, dreams, and identities are important.
It wraps up with a joyful “Field-Mouse Song” celebrating family, politeness, and happiness.
